Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Complex 40
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Complex 40 (LC-40) was a Launch Site at Merritt Island, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The site was used by the US Air Force, for Titan III and Titan IV launches.
The first launch from LC-40 was the maiden flight of the Titan IIIC, carrying two transtage upper stages to test the functionality of the vehicle.
Two interplanetry missions were launched from the pad. On September 25, 1992, it was the launch site for the failed Mars Observer spacecraft, and on October 15, 1997, it was used to launch the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn.
The last use of the pad was on April 30, 2005, when a Titan IVB launched the USA 176 early warning satellite.
The structures such as the tower and MSS are still intact, and the pad is one of several sites under consideration as a backup launch complex for the Ares I and Ares V rockets.
