Alex Geoffrey Rothberg was born February 23, 1987 to Henry Rothberg and Sheila Alderman. The family lived in Woodbridge, Connecticut. Alex was followed two years later by Rebecca Rothberg and year after that by Samantha Rothberg. From the ages of 5 to 7, he attended Beecher Road School for Kindergarten and part of First Grade. His family then moved to Hunters Hill, Australia (a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales).

Attending the local public school, Alex excelled in his classes. He found the school too easy and after completing the remainder of second and third grades at the public school, began attending a private Jewish school, Masada. At the same time he took the entrance exams to the prestigious state-run selective schools. Spending less than a full school year at Masada, the Rothberg Family returned to the United States.

Back in Woodbridge, Alex, Rebecca and Samantha all attended Beecher.

His friend Tenghao "Tony" Zhang likes to point out that "He almost qualified for the United States of America Mathematics Olympiad with a score index of 138.5. A 220 was required to qualify."

Alex currently attend MIT where he is majoring in computer science and economics.

He is a member if the Omicron chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa.
