Canterbury United is an football (soccer) team from Christchurch, New Zealand. Canterbury United play their matches at English Park in Christchurch and average approximately 1,000 spectators to a home game. They also usually play a home match up in Nelson during the course of the season. The sides manager is currently Danny Halligan, a former All White international , who also coached them in their inaugural season. In Canterbury United's first season in the New Zealand Football Championship ( NZFC ) they missed out on the playoffs by four competition points , ultimately finishing fourth. One find of Canterbury's inaugural season was teenage midfielder Jeremy Brockie. Brockie has now signed for champion A-League side Sydney FC.[1]
During the offseason Canterbury picked up key acquisitions in former Kingz goalkeeper James Bannatyne and midfielder Andrew Barron from the Irish League[citation needed]. Canterbury United finished second in the league after a 4-3 on loss penalties to Auckland City in the 2006 competition final. The final was a 3-3 draw after regular and extra time. The loss denied Canterbury United a place in the world club championship's Oceania qualifying tournament.[2]
Canterbury's All White striker Brent Fisher signed up with Swedish side Bodens BK late in the 2005-06 season.[citation needed] He was the second leading goalscorer in the NZFC , with 13 goals in 16 matches before his departure.
