[edit] History
Founded in 1915 and still guided by lay Roman Catholics, Canterbury is a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in forms 3rd through 6th (9th through 12th grades). The School prides itself on creating a community based on Catholic values, where students and faculty forge lasting bonds and every student experiences a broad and challenging program in a small school setting. The School's educational environment fosters academic rigor, athletic development, artistic enrichment and spiritual growth. The hallmark of a Canterbury education is the School's willingness to accept students as they are, support them where necessary, stretch them where appropriate, and inspire them to become moral leaders in a secular world.
[edit] Facilities
Old School House facilitates the language and history departments. The majority of language and history classes will be held in this building. Canterbury offers Spanish, French, and Latin as foreign languages.
Hume facilitates the theology and mathematic departments on the upper level, and the science department on the lower level. The Hume building also houses Canterbury's McGuire Auditorium on the upper level.
Steele Hall facilitates the library on the upper level, and the business office and a lecture room on the lower level. In addition, the school dining hall and cafeteria is located on the lower level of Steele.
Dorms Sheehan House (nee Middle House) for upper form Boys, Carter House (nee South House) for upper form girls, Duffy House (nee North House) for lower form girls, Hickory Hearth, Havemeyer Hall for middle form boys, and Carmody for lower form boys. The school is constructing a new dorm, named South House, for middle form girls
Chapel of Our Lady Built in 1930s and expanded in 1960, the chapel can seat the student body. The bottom floor of the chapel also contains a classroom. Its impressive stained glass windows have been recently restored.
Athletic Facilities The New Athletic Facility contains the Draddy Hockey Arena (1975), 5 squash courts, the field house (basketball courts), weight room, and a wrestling room. Across from the Athletic Center is the Pigott Basketball Arena, locker facilities and the newly rebuilt aquatic center.
[edit] Dining Hall
Canterbury offers a full service dining hall preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. We offer an array of soups made from scratch, great entrees, delicious desserts, and a fresh salad bar. At lunch we offer also a deli or a grill item. Some nights we offer specials such as a grill night, breakfast at dinner, top your own ice cream or cupcake bar. All meals are prepared under the direction of a Culinary Institute of America chef. We also offer a full yogurt bar daily as a healthy alternative. One vegetarian item is offered at each meal.
[edit] Arts
For a small school, Canterbury offers an exceptionally strong program in the fine arts. Students' talents enliven school life. The school’s state of the art facilities provide space for music practice, recordings, art exhibits, and performances; during the year student art is displayed throughout the school in various hallways and rooms.
