Canfield is a city located in Mahoning County, Ohio, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 224 and State Route 46, about ten miles southwest of Youngstown. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 7,374. In 2005 Canfield was rated the 82nd best place to live in the U.S. by Money magazine.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,374 people, 2,917 households, and 2,143 families residing in the city. The population density was 613.6/km² (1,588.1/mi²). There were 3,043 housing units at an average density of 253.2/km² (655.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.27% White, 1.29% Asian, 0.45% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.

There were 2,917 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.0% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $39,434, and the median income for a family was $51,484. Males had a median income of $35,346 versus $20,493 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,756. About 22.1% of families and 23.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over.

Canfield is a wealthy suburb of Youngstown, Ohio with strict zoning regulations prohibiting government housing, large signage, overgrown lawns, and above-ground pools. The tree-lined "Green" sits at the heart of the quaint New England-style village. Here many community activities take place.

In 1992, Canfield City residents, although surrounded completely by Canfield Township, voted to secede from the Township. This motion created two separate governmental entities. One being a municipal form and the other a township form. However this did not destroy the community spirit that exists between both the City and Township. Both cooperate with each other for the mutual benefit of their particular constituents. An example of this is mutual fire protection service, communications with each other with respect to roads and highways, and the physical assets of both (schools, parks, etc.).

The Canfield Local School District serves the City of Canfield, Canfield Township, and a small portion of Boardman and Beaver Townships. The district ranks "excellent" with the Ohio Department of Education. The district is ranked 13th of 614 schools throughout the state of Ohio. The Canfield Cardinals High School Football team was awarded the runner-up trophy in the Division II state championship held in Massillon, Ohio in 2005. The team had a 14-1 season, losing only at the state finals to Toledo Central Catholic High School from Toledo, Ohio.

Canfield continues to grow: new housing developments are popping up throughout the city and adjacent Canfield Township, providing a stark contrast to the homes and buildings in the central city, much of which are well over a century old (Canfield was Mahoning County's original seat before it was moved to Youngstown in 1876). While the growth is embraced by the city, it is also gobbling up the family farms and bucolic countryside that the village was once known for.

Every year in late August the Canfield Fair ("Ohio's Largest Fair") takes place at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The fair attracts many Ohio citizens. A few famous entertainers have performed at the Canfield Fair, including Bob Hope, Dolly Parton, Rascal Flatts, The Beach Boys, The Monkees, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Brad Paisley, The Goo Goo Dolls, and Bill Cosby.

Canfield is served by a branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
