Cane was introduced as Amber Moore's (Adrienne Frantz) blind date, whom she began using to make Adrian Korbel (Eyal Podell) jealous. As she speculated, she researched frantically to find out that Cane might be the son of Jill Abbott. Since Katherine Chancellor and Jill were acting so strange around him, before he knew they were his mother and grandmother, he coined them the "looney toons." It was revealed on February 21, 2007 that Cane is actually Jill Abbott's (Jess Walton) son, Phillip Chancellor III, who was switched at birth by her then-nemesis Katherine (Jeanne Cooper). Jill learned that he prefers to go by his nickname Cane, rather then his real name Ethan.

Amber tricked Cane into marriage by arranging a faux wedding (her friend, Alison Stewart, inpersonated Cane). Amber is using him for the money he doesn't know he has.

Katherine ordered a DNA test to prove that Cane really is Jill's son, since she thinks everything happened too quick. It was revealed that the DNA test proved that Jill is not his mother. Cane's uncle, Langley, soon sent a photo to Jill and Kay, which proved that Cane is Jill's son. Cane is eager to get to know his mother, but insists that he wants nothing to do with Kay. After the proven photo, they decided to do another DNA test. After Cane and Amber's wedding party a messenger came to Jill with the DNA results, but she asked Cane if they shouldn't bother opening it and just accept that they are both mother and son. However Kay came in and insisted to Jill that she open the envolope. After Jill opened the envolope, the results proved that Cane is the son of Jill.
