Candy store

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about a type of retail store. For the television commercial, see Candy Store (television commercial).

A candy store sells confectionery and is usually targeted to children or tourists. Since a candy store is usually filled with an assortment of sweets far larger than a grocery or convenience store's candy section, the selection is novel and sometimes overwhelming. To complete the atmosphere of excitement, candy stores are typically designed with an entertaining theme, not unlike a miniature theme park. A popular theme involves the shop and sometimes the candy looking old-fashioned or retro.

[edit] History

The first chocolate store opened in 1657 in London, but its expensive chocolates allowed only the wealthiest to shop there. In the United States, Orne's Candy Store opened in 1885 in downtown Boothbay Harbor on the coast of Maine. Wolcott Webster purchased the store in 1960 but retained the 19th century atmosphere. Fannie May Candies, a chain retail candy shop operating today, opened its first retail candy shop in Chicago in 1920.

A candy store is located on the edge of the fictional neighborhood Peach Creek in the cartoon Ed, Edd n Eddy.
