Candy Candido

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Candy Candido (December 25, 1913 - May 19, 1999) was an American actor and bass player.

Born Jonathan Joseph Candido in New Orleans, Louisiana, Candy and his distinctively deep voice became a fixture on early American radio where he made a catchphrase of the sentence "I'm feelin' mighty low", to the point he recorded a song of the same title with Jimmy Durante (On whose radio show he was a regular.)

He briefly teamed up with Bud Abbott during Abbott's attempted comeback in 1960. Candido also contributed his voice to numerous cartoons, particularly for Walt Disney: his roles for the company included the Indian Chief in Peter Pan, the Tournament Crocodile in Robin Hood, the Graveyard Executioner in the Haunted Mansion attraction, and Fidget the bat in The Great Mouse Detective. He also appeared in Chuck Jones' adaptation of The Phantom Tollbooth, and the Ralph Bakshi movies Hey Good Lookin' and Heavy Traffic.

Candy was married to actress Anita Gordon. He died in his sleep at his Burbank, California home at the age of 85.

[edit] Trivia

  • Perhaps ironically, Candido's catchphrase might be most remembered today because it was homaged in the 1950 Bugs Bunny cartoon Homeless Hare, a production in which Candido played no part.
  • Candido voiced a skeleton in the film, Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion, which starred his future partner, Bud Abbott and his current partner, Lou Costello.
