Regional profile
Historically a split between the Conservatives and Liberals (and a Liberal sweep in 1993 and 1997 primarily due to vote-splitting), things have changed dramatically in Eastern Ontario recently, especially after the merger of the former Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties. With the exception of the liberal city of Kingston, Eastern Ontario has become a strongly conservative region both fiscally and (especially) socially - the most conservative region in Ontario and perhaps all of eastern Canada. The Conservatives already held two seats won in the 2000 election when they were picked up by the Canadian Alliance and gained three more in 2004 and picked up a sixth seat in 2006. They hope to solidify support throughout the region. The urban seat of Kingston and the Islands remains safely in Liberal hands; it is the exception in this region.
