Regional profile
This suburban area has traditionally been conservative but has quickly trended liberal, primarily due to the rapid growth of the Greater Toronto Area and high immigrant populations, just like the suburbs to the north of Toronto. The Liberals have held every seat in this region in every election since 1993, and while vote-splitting was a factor originally, the Liberals kept all their seats here in 2004 and again in 2006 by healthy margins, even as star candidates were running in several ridings. The Conservatives had hoped to take some seats but were shut out. The New Democratic Party (NDP) is not a factor here. The defection of Wajid Khan, however, has given the Conservatives more visible presence here however, and it would not take a land-slide shift in public opinion to deliver such newly marginal seats such as Mississauga South and Mississauga-Erindale, and especially Oakville, into Tory hands.
