The original image is English, not U.S. The original image may have lost its copyright protections, but this newly created digital image has not - it is a derivative work and part of a private, copyrighted collection. I've asked the copyright holder if we can use it, but as it stands, this image most certainly isn't PD - as it comes from a copyrighted website. Rklawton 21:11, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Contesting. Direct quote from Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Public_domain: "Also note that in the United States, reproductions of two-dimensional artwork which is in the public domain because of age do not generate a new copyright — for example, a straight-on photograph of the Mona Lisa would not be considered copyrighted (see Bridgeman v. Corel)." Note the Mona Lisa isn't U.S. either. Seems a clear reproduction of two-dimensional artwork, no important original work in the derivation. AnonEMouse (squeak) 19:18, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
