Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol

The Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol is the most important football competition of the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol, the football federation of Ecuador. It is a regular tournament, originally yearly, and it has been played since 1957, with a two-year break from 1958 to 1959. In 2005 it was played twice a year, in the first and second halves of every year. In 2006, it returned to the original yearly format.
The Campeonato Ecuatoriano is divided into various divisions. The first two divisions are called Serie A and Serie B. The first two teams of each division advance to the next-highest division of the FEF, and the last two, in turn, fall back to the next-lowest division. For example, the champion and runner-up of the Serie B advance to the following year's Serie A competition. The best two or three teams of the first division (Serie A) also advance to the Copa Libertadores.
Since 2003, the Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol is sponsored by beer brewers Cervecería Andina (CA) from Quito and Compañía de Cervezas Nacionales (CCN) from Guayaquil, both owned by Bogotá beer company Grupo Empresarial Bavaria, acquired in 2005 by SABMiller. That is why, since then, the Campeonato Ecuatoriano and the cup given to the champion are also called Copa Pilsener, because of the trademarked Pilsener beer which has the highest market share in Ecuador and is sold all around the country in mom-and-pop stores and drunk by Ecuadorian soccer fans while watching soccer on TV or at the stadium. CA and CCN have also sponsored various teams of the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol and the Ecuador national football team.

[edit] The two tournaments in 2005
In 2005, each year of the Campeonato Ecuatoriano got divided into two halves, which are called Torneo Apertura (opening tournament) and Torneo Clausura (closing tournament). The winning team of the first half (Torneo Apertura) of the 2005 season was the Liga Deportiva Universitaria from Quito.
