Camp Savage is the former site of an Military Intelligence Service language school operating during World War II. The school itself was established in San Francisco, but was moved in 1942 to Savage, Minnesota in the interest of national security. The purpose of the school was to teach the Japanese language to American soldiers of Japanese descent. This was necessary because the Nisei, children of Japanese immigrants, had little proficiency in the Japanese language. With instruction in the Japanese language, the soldiers could then translate captured documentation and aid the American war effort. The program was later moved to Fort Snelling in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The memorial sign shown in the photo no longer exists. The memorial has been removed due to road construction.
