Camp El Har is a Christian camp located in Dallas, Texas, United States, near Joe Pool Lake. Its main purpose is to provide campers ages 5-14 years old with a place away from worldly things. Campers enjoy activities such as singing, Bible lessons, horseback riding, swimming, sports, crafts, and wilderness trips.[2]
[edit] History
On November 11, 1937, Camp El Har ("Hill of God") was founded in south Dallas. The first independent Christian camp in the state of Texas, its facilities were built by volunteers and financially supported by donations. In the 1960s, the camp had financial troubles and selling the property was avoided by transferring ownership and operations to Scofield Memorial Church.
Under Scofield ownership, the camp's programs and facilities grew. A day camp program was added in 1979 and since then the programs have expanded to include the Circle 'C' Ranch equestrian program, outdoor education programs for schools and home school families and a wilderness trip program.
In 1997, the camp incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization[3] and returned to ownership and operation independent of Scofield Memorial Church, presenting itself as a "Christ-centered camping and conference center ministry for North Texas".[4]
As of 2006 Camp El Har has closed its doors.[citation needed]
