[edit] Camp Arcadia
Camp Arcadia is an all-girl sleepaway camp located in Casco, ME on Pleasent Lake. It has been highly awarded in its efforts to teach girls from all over the world basic wilderness skills for the past 91 years. A girl from ages 7-17 can go to the camp from a range of 2-7 weeks.
[edit] History
Camp Arcadia was founded in 1916 by George Meylan, whose granddaughters and great granddaughter still run the camp today. Anne Fritts, Louise Fritts Johnson, Louise Henderson all are in charge of the camp and its 180 girls. Most other family members help out in varied ways like Frank Fritts who runs the waterfront. Casco, ME is about 45 minutes from Portland and is centered around Pleasant Lake. Camp Arcadia's large lakefront is the main for all water activities. The white sand and large trees make Camp Arcadia incredibly beautiful with the large field in the middle of the camp for roaming and running around in.
[edit] Program
The Arcadian program is based around teaching each girl that they should plan and carry out their own individual program and attain proficiency with guidance. These theory is supported by the many activities at Camp Arcadia. These include the Basics, boating, campcraft, swimming and canoeing, and other electives such as art, horseback riding, archery, kayaking, sailing, tennis, nature, gymnastics, dance, music, diving, synchronized swimming, knitting, weaving, photography, and writing in the camp's journal, Chippy. Camp Arcadia also has a wonderful trips program in which campers are brought to either hike in the White Mountains or canoe in the series of lakes in Maine. Some of these include Mt Washington, Mt Lafyette, Mt. Katahdin, Lake Sebago, and other wilderness adventures.
[edit] Other Arcadian Programs
Other than being an all-girls camp in the summer, Camp Arcadia does a series of programs for different causes. After the girl's summer is over, there is Week at Arcadia which is like a taste of camp for girls who are not sure if they want to go to camp for the full time. Week at Arcadia is a great program for girls to explore the wilderness and enjoy a peek at a world outdoors. There is also Family Camp where an entire family can go together to camp and have an entire cabin to themselves. This is a wonderful opportunity for family bonding and is a chance for anyone to do the activities in regular camp with their family.
