Camoapa

Camoapa is a municipality in the Boaco department of Nicaragua. It has a population of 40,700 (2006, est.) and an extension of 1,483.29 Km². The economy is based mainly on agricultural and agropecuarian activities. The capital of the municipality is the town of Camoapa located 114 km. from Managua.

Camoapa has the highest unemployment rate in the whole department of Boaco, 52%, according to AMUNIC, the Association for Municipalities of Nicaragua. The mayor is Rolando Ruiz Díaz from the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC).

The municipality of Camoapa was founded on August 23, 1858 and has a prominent rural population, 67% against 33% of people living in urban areas. The local festivities are held on June 24 in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
