Cameron Newton is an American Football Quarterback for the University of Florida. Newton is expected to fight for the position of back up quarterback, behind returning Sophmore Tim Tebow, with Bryan Weggener and John Brantley. Newton was judged a four star recruit and the #14 quarterback in the country by scout.com[1]. ESPN have compared him to former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, except that Newton is a superior runner.[2]

[edit] High School

Newton is a monster of an athlete and huge pocket passer with deceptive speed and quickness. Essentially he has been descrided as a pocket passer with the ability to get out of trouble and make some plays with his legs when he has to. His release is high and over the top from the ear. He shows good touch on underneath throws and the ability to change velocities and crank it up. He also exhibits a good zip on the deep out route and gets adequate RPMs on his downfield throws. [3].

In 2005 Newton threw for 2500 yards and 23 touchdowns with 638 yards rushing and 9 touchdowns.

[edit] University

Newton chose Florida over 40 other schools including Oklahoma and Mississippi State[4]. In selecting the Gators, Newton said,

"I love the University of Florida. I think that it's the best place for me to develop as a quarterback and I think my talents fit that system better than any other out there."[5]

Newton enrolled in Florida in January of 2007 and will compete at spring practice.
