[edit] Plot
After learning in "Arthur's Mantle" that Merlin, a de-ascended Ancient, had created a weapon to destroy the Ori, SG-1 travels to the world of Camelot to attempt to find it. The village's inhabitants welcome them, telling them about the history of King Arthur, which differs from the ones the Tau'ri know, such as defeating Mordred and leaving to search for the Sangraal—the Holy Grail. They also view Merlin as a malacious trickster, and are also unwilling to help SG-1 to investigate Merlin's library, which was sealed after Merlin left, because they fear the "Curse of the Black Knight". Col. Mitchell however is not impressed since he once defeated one of Merlin's knights.
During their search SG-1 meets a young woman named Valencia, engaged in a sword-play with her younger brother. They convince them to help them find the library, however, it is "magicked"—specifically, there is a shield preventing people from touching the lock. There is a key, but it is in the possession of the villages historian, an old man named Antonius. Antonius at first refuses to help, fearing the curse, but Daniel appeals to his historic sense. Going with SG-1 at the dead of night, Antonius uses the key to deactivate the shield and unlock the door. Upon entering the library, they find a lot of books and scrolls. While Daniel searches through them, Mitchell accidentally finds a secret door. Antonius leaves, while SG-1 enters the hidden room where they find an Ancient control panel, which activates when Daniel steps on the platform.
Meanwhile in the village the Black Knight appears and kills Antonius. When his murder is found out, the village's leader Meurik wants SG-1 to leave. While Daniel tries to explain to them that there is no magic, they are beamed aboard the Odyssey, and learn that an intact Ori Supergate has been discovered by the Jaffa. Col. Carter and Teal'c go with the Odyssey, and Mitchell and Daniel continue searching the library. Meanwhile Earth plans to gather a fleet of their allies to fight the Ori at the Supergate. Teal'c however leaves with a Tel'tak to find more allies in the Lucian Alliance.
Back at Camelot, Daniel finds a code with which he hopes to deactivate the Black Knight, but it nevertheless appears in the village. Mitchell attempts to fight the Black Knight, which causes Valencia to pull a sword from the stone which she then gives him, since his P90 causes no damage on the Knight. Jackson solves the Ancient device's puzzle, thus unlocks Merlin's treasures, and disables the console in the library, destroying the Black Knight as it was about to kill Mitchell. Afterwards the villagers enter the library and Daniel concludes that a pendant which Merlin is wearing is the anti-Ori weapon. Unfortunately, it is not on the planet. Meurik however reveals to them that this pendant is the Sangraal. He also tells them that Arthur and his knights went to search for the Sangraal long ago, travelling to three distant lands: Castianna, Sahal, and Vagonbrei. Suddenly the two SG-1 members are beamed up by the Russian ship Korolev, which had been pressed into service to assist in the coming battle.
Meanwhile at the Supergate, the Asgard Kvasir arrives and reveals how the anti-Ori weapon functions. They hope that the death of their leaders will cause the followers of the Ori to stop their invasion but first they have to find the weapon. Carter and Kvasir come up with a plan to reprogram the Supergate so that they can dial the Ori home galaxy, in the hope of blocking the Ori invasion since the gate hasn't the 38 minute limit which other Stargates have. Carter, wearing a space suit, beams to the Supergate and tries to reprogram it but they are not fast enough, and the Ori dial in. This leaves Carter stranded in space as the Ori fleet emerges from the Supergate. The Korelev arrives, as does aid from the Lucian Alliance, after Teal'c takes great risks to secure their aid. Four Ori battlecruisers come through the Gate, one of which is carrying Vala. A great battle starts between the Milky Way fleet and the Ori ships, but the allied forces aren't able to break through the powerful Ori shields. The Ori battlecruisers destroy most of the Ha'taks and one of the Earth Battlecruisers. Which Earth vessel was destroyed is not made clear in the show, however. On one of the Ori vessels, Vala Mal Doran looks in horror at the devastated Milky Way fleet and feel her child coming to. The episode ends in a cliffhanger.
[edit] Quotes
- Sam: This sure looks like the place where Merlin might have lived.
Mitchell: There could be dozens of villages in the area, just like this one. There is no way to be sure.
Daniel: Well...there is that... [points to the sword in the stone]
- Daniel: You are making a mistake. There is no curse. The black knight is a security feature created by Merlin through the use of science and advanced technology. There is no magic... [the Odyssey beams up SG-1]
(later)
Daniel: Once and for all: There was no curse. This is a device. There is no magic... [the Korolev beams him up]
Daniel: Boy, my timing is off today...
- Kvasir: There was enough data for us to surmise what this so-called anti-Ori weapon might be.
Sam: Really? I wasn't able to make heads or tails of it.
Kvasir: (ironic) Really?
Sam: (annoyed) Just tell me what you got...
[edit] Notes
- This is the first Stargate SG-1 season finale since "Revelations" that was not intended to be the SG-1 series finale, and the first one since "Exodus" that was a cliffhanger.
- This episode was written without the knowledge that Stargate SG-1 would be picked up for a tenth season, meaning that this could very well have been the series finale, ending the show on a cliffhanger.
- The Korolev appears in this episode and it is finally revealed what class of earth ship it is.
- The title harks back to the Season Nine premiere, "Avalon", which deals with another Arthurian myth.
- The battle at the end of this episode is generally referred to as "the battle of P3Y-229", after the planet that used to be where the Supergate is.
- General Landry does not appear in this episode.
- John Noble, who plays Meurik, is known to fantasy fans for playing Denethor in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
