Cambria Heights, Queens

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cambria Heights is a middle class neighborhood in the southeastern portion of the New York City borough of Queens. It runs along the Cross Island Parkway which separates it from Nassau County. The neighborhood has a large Caribbean and African American population. Recently Jewish families have settled along Francis Lewis Boulevard and 121st Avenue. They have done so due to be near to the grave of Chasidic leader Menachem Mendel Schneerson who is buried in Montefiore Cemetery, a nearby Jewish cemetery. This has created a spurr of houses being sold as well as some animosity.Latinos have also begun to settle in the community. Cambria Heights is known for its globe lanterns that dot the lawns of many households. These globe lanterns originate from the urban foundings of Cambria Heights. The houses in Cambria Heights were originally built as homes for soldiers after World War II.

In the Fall of 2006, it was published in the New York Times that Cambria Heights is one of few communities in New York, where African and Carribbean Americans earn more than their white americans. It was also listed in Money Magazine's Best places to live in 2006.

The Main public schools in Cambria Heights are Elementary Schools P.S. 176 and P.S. 147 (re-named for Astronaut Ronald McNair), and High School Campus Magnet formerly known as Andrew Jackson High School.

Cambria Heights contains a large park called Cabell Park which contains 2 baseball fields, 5 basketball hoops, two jungle gyms, fountains for summer play, a handball wall, as well as benches for lounging. P.S. 176 also houses a park with a vast blacktop, a jungle gym, 7 basketball hoops, and a large wading pool. P.S. 147 has a baseball field (tar), basketball courts, a jungle gym, swings, and chess tabels.
