CalorieMate (カロリーメイト) is a brand of energy-supplement foods produced by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., in Japan. CalorieMate products are labeled, apparently without irony, simply as "Balanced Food." Their packaging is quite plain, almost generic.

The description seen on all CalorieMate products reads:

CALORIE MATE (product name) is a nutritionally balanced source of the energy needed for daily activities. CALORIE MATE (product name) is naturally suited for people on-the-go who need an easy source of energy and nutrition-at breakfast, work, sports, study, or any busy time.

Following the description are ingredient and nutritional information.

CalorieMate comes in several forms, including Block, Jelly, and Can. CalorieMate Block (カロリーメイト ブロック) resembles a bar-shaped cookie, sold in packs of either two or four. CalorieMate Jelly (カロリーメイト ゼリー) is a gelatin sold in a pouch with a spout. CalorieMate Can (カロリーメイト 缶) is a canned drink.

[edit] Appearance in popular culture

CalorieMate makes an appearance in the video game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The item is pictured as CalorieMate Block (Chocolate) and fully restores (the main character) Snake's stamina when consumed. His replies after eating are "MMM Delicious!!", "That's tasty!", "I want some more!" and "That's damn good!"

CalorieMate has also teamed up with Kiefer Sutherland aka Jack Bauer from the hit TV Series 24, on Fox Network to help promote their products though numerous commercials.

In the Japanese version of the first game of the Phantasy Star series, there is a common item called PelorieMate (ペロリメイト), an obvious reference to CalorieMate. In the English version, this item has been renamed to Cola

In a gag comic parodying Full Metal Panic called Ikinari Full Metal Panic, the main male character Sagara Sosuke reveals that he eats an energy supplement food called "CalorieMark", an obvious parody of CalorieMate. He is also seen eating what appears to be a CalorieMate stick in one episode of Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, though the actual product is unnamed in the animation. He is described as eating Calorie Mates in more than one of the original novels, and some of the illustrations show this specifically.

In Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG (Episode 8: Fake Food), a "Calorie Friend" package that looks exactly a Calorie Mate package is found scattered on Gouda's desk along with pills and other energy boosters as he watches a debate program.
