Callochromis macrops |
Callochromis is a genus of cichlids, including the species C. macrops and C. pleurospilus. Both species occupy sandy bottom areas of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, C. macrops males attaining six inches in length, C. pleurospilus four inches. As sandsifters, both species eat sand-dwelling invertebrates. Unlike many other sandsifters, Callochromis species are somewhat aggressive, especially when breeding. C. pleurospilus has become popular with fishkeeping hobbyists because of its compact size, iridescent colors, and relative toughness.
