California Superintendent of Public Instruction

California Superintendent of Public Instruction, or SPI, is a nonpartisan elected executive office position who is in charge of the California Department of Education. He/she serves a four year term. The current Superintendent of Public Instruction is Jack O'Connell. The position is a former partisan position.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction is California's state education agency, and is generally responsible for carrying out the SPI's duties.

  • As the state’s chief spokesperson for public schools, provides education policy and direction to local school districts.
  • Directs all functions of the Department of Education and executes policies set by the State Board of Education.
  • Serves as an ex-officio member of governing boards of the state’s higher education system.
  • Works with the educational community to improve academic performance.
