The film stars Alan Alda, Jane Fonda, Walter Matthau, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Elaine May, Maggie Smith, and Michael Caine and was directed by Herbert Ross.
Maggie Smith won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of the flamboyant English actress, Diana Barry.
The opening credits are shown with a leisurely display of about a dozen unobscured California-themed paintings by famed English pop artist David Hockney.
