[edit] District Profile
The 5th District covers much of the Sacramento River Delta, including parts of urban Sacramento, the San Francisco North Bay, and the Central Valley.
Yolo County is entirely in the district, along with the delta area of Sacramento (including the city of Isleton) and most of Solano County. The Solano County cities of Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun City, and Vacaville are in the 5th district.
The Central Valley area includes most of San Joaquin County. The cities of Stockton, Tracy, Lathrop, and Manteca are in the San Joaquin portion of the district.
[edit] Politics
As of 2006, 46% of Registered Voters were registered Democrat while 33% were registered Republican. Despite these registration numbers, the 5th is usually one of the most competetive Senate districts in the state. In the 2004 election, for example, incumbent Democratic Senator Michael Machado only received 52% of the vote.
[edit] 2001 Redistricting
The 5th is perhaps one of the most altered districts of the 2001 redistricting. In the 1990s, the district included most of Sacramento County south of the American River and San Joaquin County north of Tracy. In 2001, most of the rural areas in both Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties were removed and Yolo County and portions of Solano County added.
