[edit] District Profile

Located in fast-growing Riverside County, the large 37th District encompasses much of the Riverside County portion of the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley. Testifying to its growth, the district has one of the largest proportions of residents living in unincorporated areas. It also had one of the highest deviations in 2000.

Essentially the 37th includes a wide range of suburban, semi-rural, and small town areas. On the western edge of Riverside County, Corona and Norco comprise about a fifth of the district. In the central valleys of the Inland Empire, Moreno Valley is the largest city in the district, which also includes Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, San Jacinto, Hemet, and Perris. A number of unincorporated areas like Romoland and Sun City are in the district.

The San Gorgiano Pass area is in the district, including the cities of Beaumont, Banning, Calimesa, and the unincorporated areas of Cherry Valley and Cabazon.

Finally, much of the Coachella Valley is in the district. This includes Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and La Quinta. The unincorporated areas of Bermuda Dunes and Desert Center--the later halfway to Blythe are also in the district.

[edit] Politics

The 37th Senate District is a safe Republican district. As of 2006, 46% of Registered Voters were registered Republican and 34.4% were registered Democratic. In 2004, Battin received 59.7% of the vote.

[edit] 2001 Redistricting

In 1991, the 37th was a desert seat, including all of Imperial County and large areas of San Diego County's desert as far west as Poway and Santee. To make the 39th and 40th districts safe for Democratics, the San Diego and Imperial County portions were removed along with more Democratic portions of the Coachella Valley such as Indio. As the district had now lost over half its population, it had to pick up residents, which came from the well-overpopulated 36th District. The net result was to make the 37th more safe for Republicans.
