California's 1st State Senate District is one of 40 Senate Districts. It is currently represented by Republican Senator Dave Cox of Fair Oaks.

The 1st District stretches along the eastern edge of the state, from the Oregon border to the Mojave Desert. It includes most of the Mother Lode and Sierra Nevada Regions in addition to Lake Tahoe. However, though most of the district is rural, two-thirds of the district's population in 2000 lived in suburban Sacramento.
It includes the entirety of Modoc, Lassen, Plumas, Sierra, Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras, Alpine, and Mono Counties.
It contains parts of Nevada, Placer, and Sacramento Counties. In Nevada County, it contains the city of Truckee and in Placer it contains the cities of Auburn and Roseville, in addition to the entirety of the county east of Auburn. The Sacramento County portion includes the cities of Galt and Folsom as well as large portions of Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova. The Sacramento County unicorporated Census Designated Places of Fair Oaks, Orangevale, Rancho Murrieta, Vineyard, and Wilton are entirely in the district, along with most of Carmichael.

The 1st Senate District is a safe Republican district. As of 2006, 46% of Registered Voters were registered Republican while only 32.5% were registered Democrat. Senator Cox received almost 63% of the vote in the 2004 General Election.
