[edit] District Profile

The 11th District contains portions of Silicon Valley as well as the Pacific coastline from just south of Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz. The 11th includes portions of San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties.

Over half of the population is located in Santa Clara County, mostly in the city of San Jose, though Palo Alto, Los Altos, Cupertino, and Campbell are in the district as well.

The San Mateo County portion includes Redwood City, Menlo Park, and San Carlos.

The city of Santa Cruz is in the district, along with Capitola.

[edit] Politics

The 11th Senate District is a safe Democratic district. As of 2006, 47% of Registered Voters were registered Democrat while 26% were registered Republican. In 2004, Senator Simitian received 67% of the vote.

[edit] 2001 Redistricting

As San Mateo County did not grow as rapidly as the rest of the state in the 1990s, the 8th Senate District needed to pick up population. The 8th moved southward, picking up Foster City, Portola Valley, and Half Moon Bay. The 15th moved northward, taking Saratoga and Los Gatos from the Santa Clara side of the 11th. These two movements pushed the 11th into Santa Cruz County, where it took just the coastal portions to Capitola, including the city of Santa Cruz.
