The Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) is the Roman Catholic separate school board in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It also serves the neighboring communities of Airdrie, Chestermere, and Cochrane. As a Catholic system in Alberta, the CCSD must accept Catholic students meeting residency and age requirements, but may refuse admission to non-Catholic students when accepting them could cause a space shortage or would threaten the Catholic majority of a school. The CCSD receives funding for all students from the provincial government of Alberta.
The district began in 1885 as the Lacombe Separate School District #1 in what was then part of the North West Territories. Its first school, also built in 1885, was St. Mary's, which is the oldest operating school in Calgary (though in a newer building).

[edit] Size
The CCSD is second in size (by student count) to the city's main school board, the public Calgary Board of Education (CBE). Unlike the Calgary Board of Education, the territory of the CCSD extends slightly outside the municipal limits of the city proper.
For the 2004-2005 school year, there are approximately 43,000 students in the CCSD, with 96 schools in total. This is made up of 49 elementary schools, 28 elementary/junior high schools, 6 junior high schools, 8 senior high schools, 2 junior/senior high schools, 1 elementary/junior/senior high school and 2 schools for special needs students.
[edit] Governance
A group of seven elected trustees run the CCSD. Each trustee represents two wards in the city. They are elected every three years, in the regular municipal election. In the election, Calgary voters can only vote for a trustee to one (not both) of the two school boards. Voters for the CCSD will include Catholics and non-Catholics who support the Catholic system. The public (CBE) and Catholic (CCSD) systems operate independently of each other, and are both under the direct authority of the provincial government of Alberta.
Though affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church; the Church has no legal authority over the CCSD. Instead the Alberta government has final authority over the CCSD (as with any school district in the province).
[edit] Special programs
The CCSD offers a variety of special program in some of schools, such as the Independent Learning program at Bishop Carroll High School, which allows students to move through the Alberta curriculum at their own individual pace.
