Cal Omas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cal Omas was a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. He was the representative of the remaining Alderaanian people during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. An ex-Rebel Alliance pilot, he had great respect for the Jedi, supporting Luke Skywalker in his early bids for the creation of a new Jedi Council, and often opposed Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya's policies.

After the Yuuzhan Vong conquered Coruscant in 24 ABY, Omas and his loyal ally Triebakk (the representative from Kashyyyk) were presumed dead, however, both resurfaced on Mon Calamari a few weeks later. Omas was elected Chief of State of the New Republic on Mon Calamari, with a little help from Jedi Master Skywalker, Talon Karrde and Lando Calrissian. Chief Omas would reform the Republic into the Galactic Alliance and lead the Alliance until the Vong's defeat.

During the Dark Nest Crisis, Omas was portrayed as a shrewd and Machiavellian character who manipulated the Jedi Council to serve what he saw as the greater good. This led to many fans comparing him to Palpatine. The Legacy of the Force books seem to belie this notion; in them, Omas is shown as a weak politician unable to stand up to his government's extreme factions.
