Café Procope

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Café Procope is the oldest restaurant of Paris. It opened in 1686 by Sicilian Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli. It started off as a café/icecream establishment. It was the first place in France to serve coffee. Because coffee was considered a subversive beverage, only freethinkers like Voltaire, who apparently drank 40 cups of coffee and chocolate mixed (known as mocha nowadays) every day, dared to consume it. Other famous customers included Benjamin Franklin and Alexander von Humboldt, who lunched here during the 1820s every day from 11am to noon.

It was refurbished in 1989 in eighteenth century style.
