Cadillac (game)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cadillac is a footbag game in which three or more players stand in a circle and compete to remain in the circle. The game is often played many times in a row with the same circle of players.

[edit] "Hacking"

In a makeshift circle, three or more players gather to begin a game of Cadillac. Anyone may join the circle spontaneously if no players have gone out of the circle. The players will "hack" until three separate people have hit the footbag, which is "alive" if it has not touched one of two things: any player's hands or the ground. A footbag perched on an obstacle, (i.e., a windowsill or a car), may be picked up with elbows or kicked off and back into play. Once three or more separate players have hit the footbag, any player may catch the footbag and shout "Cadillac!", thereby obtaining a "Cadillac". Upon the word being shouted, all players in the circle must stop all movement of their feet. If any player moves their feet, they are immediately out and the circle goes back to hacking.

[edit] The Throw

If no players do move after the word is shouted, the catcher has three steps to get in position to throw the footbag at a stopped player. A stopped player may move anything but his feet in defense of the catcher. If the catcher throws the footbag at a stopped player and hits him, he is out. If more than one player is hit by the footbag before it is caught or hits the ground, they are out as well. However, if the footbag is caught by a stopped player, no player is out except the original catcher.

[edit] Three or fewer players

When the circle contains three or fewer players, the rules for obtaining a Cadillac change. The footbag must still make contact with any player three separate times, but only two players are required for a cadillac to exist. The player who throws the last Cadillac wins the game.

[edit] Etiquette

Generally, players adhere to a system of etiquette particular to the game:

  • Apologies are regarded as a sign of weakness, and will often place the apologetic player in a negative light.
  • Players divide the circle into equal parts per the amount of players, and remain in their "pie piece".
  • Infringing on another player's "pie piece" will often bring the infringing player an out.
  • How hard the footbag is thrown is often a deciding factor in whether or not one is a friendly player.

[edit] Alternative rules

Many alterations to the game are improvised, but some are worthy of being replicated and played often.

[edit] Battle-ac

A fusion of the words "battle" and "cadillac". This version of the game makes the process much more difficult. The requirements for obtaining a Cadillac are the same, but the catcher must catch the footbag while he is in the air and throw it before he lands. Because of the speed of the game, the catcher does not have to shout "Cadillac." The players hit are understood to be out.

[edit] Cadillac Skills

In the "Skills" version of Cadillac, the catcher is out if his throw does not hit a stopped player.
