[edit] C/A/T Article For Deletion
- Copied from User talk:Sandstein
Hello, I see you've suggested an article I had just started, C/A/T should be deleted. As you may be aware, it is extreme difficult for North American industrial and goth musicians to really secure major record releases, and I understand that there is always some Wikipedia related discussion as to what a relevant musicial contribution is. I think you've proposed for an article deletion too soon, and would suggest you check out similar Wikipedia articles for other similar artists, such as Claire Voyant, Switchblade Symphony, and Vernian Process. C/A/T has toured across the United States, and I feel is significant enough to warrant a Wikipedia page. Thank you, MCalamari 19:02, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hello. Thank you for your considerate message. The applicable standard is WP:BAND. One criterium of this standard is "Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country, reported in notable and verifiable sources." Are there such sources, or can you show that any other criterium of WP:BAND is met? Best regards, Sandstein 19:12, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, and thank you for the quick reply! :) There have been *three* festivals of note that C/A/T has been invited to, and C/A/T also was a nominee to Germany's Wave Gotik Treffen, however, I don't know if WGT 15 has invited them or not (they could have turned WGT down for financial reasons). C/A/T is listed in Australia's Distorted Music Festival 2005 lineup at 2005 Lineup, but work visas prevented Arp from performing (Clark couldn't make it). Several of the other bands at the Distorted festival (Converter, Mono No Aware, and Black Lung) are easily frequently discussed in trade magazines. I'll look to find any references to C/A/T in similar magazines. Should I include reviews in a list of references on the main page? Again thanks! MCalamari 19:27, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

- Here is another link to the Distorted 2005 lineup [1]. I'm having problems finding online references for the Providence Rhode Island and the Madison Wisconsin festivals, though I recall (could be wrong ... I'll double check) a number of larger European industrial bands have been invited to the Rhode Island festivals in the past. MCalamari 19:33, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

- Splendid. I'll remove the PROD tag. You might indeed want to merge this information into the article (unless you want to explain all this to the next trigger-happy editor again). I've added a welcome message to your talk page with more links about how to edit articles, including adding links. Best regards, Sandstein 20:21, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for your replies and help! :) I did find a way to include some of the festival information into the article. I'm now of the opinion that since so many of these festivals are still somewhat underground, that we might want to document what we can about them in their own articles. Even the Wave Gotik Treffen article is really just a stub, and WGT is one of the most respected international music festivals for these genres. I'm curious if you feel that would be a valuable contribution to Wikipedia? Thanks again. MCalamari 00:01, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

- Ah, now we are in difficult territory. You see, every day an enormous amount of music-related material regarding "underground" bands is added to Wikipedia, the typical case being just four guys and their dog in a garage. Editors such as I, who think Wikipedia is not a vehicle for self-promotion, try to weed those out that not actually notable (yet). But then, Wikipedia tradition is to be bold. If you feel those festivals are notable and there is enough encyclopaedic material for an article (not just flyer stuff such as dates, band names etc.), by all means go ahead and write about them. You might also want to look at the articles about the relevant genre or scene, e.g. Darkwave. Maybe a mention in those articles is all these festivals need or deserve. Or you can ask the editors of these articles on the talk pages of these articles. Chances are they know more about the notability of these festivals than I. Best, Sandstein 06:22, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] C/A/T is primarily a phototypesetter
I'm pretty much surprised to see an article under this term describing a recent band. The term C/A/T (an acronym for Computer Aided Typesetting) is, however, not new but has been used for the name of a phototypesetter device of the 70s manufactured by Graphic Systems Inc. troff, a computer typesetting system developed in the 70s supported C/A/T as output device. - Well, I know that the name of band wasn't not related to that, as I've directly spoken with Ben A. about where the name comes from. However, the standard convention for many band names on Wikipedia is to append "(band)" onto the article. If you or anybody else would like to create an article for Computer Aided Typesetting, I think it would be good to move this article to "C/A/T (band)" and then add the note that there are other entries with "C/A/T" in them on the Computer Aided Typesetting article. Or we could put a note on this article also pointing to the existing Computer Aided Typesetting article. :) What do you think we should do? MCalamari 17:21, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
