[edit] History

[edit] Eblana School

On January 1. 1857, the Christian Brothers opened a school at Eblana Avenue in Dun Laoghaire. This was just ten years after the Great Famine and emigration was rife. The school at Eblana prospered to an extent that it became impossible to accommodate both primary and secondary departments in the 19th. Century buildings.

[edit] Monkstown Park

Accordingly, in 1949 the Brothers purchased the nearby estate of Monkstown Park, which had been most recently occupied by a Protestant school. At that point the school which had hitherto been known as St. Michael's College split into public and private schools, with the private part (the new CBC Monkstown) moving and the public (now CBS Eblana) remaining on the site.

The secondary department, which the exception of the commercial stream, moved to the house at Monkstown in 1950, and extended the neo-classical house built by Charles Haliday in 1843. In 1987 the school was further extended to include new offices, cafeteria, staff room and technology department. Our latest addition is the Edmund Rice Oratory, opened in 1994.

This was the origin of CBC Monkstown. The school motto is "Certa Bonum Certamen (CBC) or "fight the good fight" and the school colours are red, black and gold.

[edit] Rugby

From the first the boys played Rugby Union as the main competitive team sport of the school and for a small school have achieved relative success, winning the Leinster Schools Senior Cup in 1976 and reaching the finals in 1984 and winning the League Cup at Junior Level in 1998 and 2004.

[edit] Past Pupils

Famous past pupils include:

The school has an active Past Pupils Union which organises annual events.

Extra-curricular activities are very important. Each year the school produces a musical in association with Loreto Foxrock which is extremely successful. Rugby is ever popular, with Athletics taking over in the summer. Other sports taken include: Golf, Swimming, Tennis, Orienteering and Badminton. Pupils in the senior cycle of the school are also given the oppertunity to participate in the Zambia Immersion Project where pupils fundraise and travel to Zambia and help in charity work. Others complete An Gaisce(Presidents Award) and the Edmund Rice awards.

[edit] Management

In the 2004 Sunday Times Schools League Table, CBC was listed among the country's top twenty school, while in the Irish Times tables in 2006, the school was the top all boys school in Ireland (3rd overall).

Though the Brothers retain a presence on the Board of Management, as Trustees, CBC is now staffed entirely by lay teachers, and is recognised as one of Ireland's leading educational establishments at secondary level[citation needed].

CBC Monkstown has over 500 students in the secondary college and more than 700 students if one includes the Preparatory School.

The current principal of the school is Mr. Patrick Keating.
