C. Don Bastian

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

C. Don Bastian and Jayaweera Bandara were popular theatrical artists of the Hindustani theatrical genre that became prevalent in Sri Lanka after a drama group called Elphinstone came to Colombo in 1870. The first stars of Sri Lankan recorded music came from this theatrical tradition.

When the Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka in the 1500s, they brought with them the African slaves they called kaffrinha, and their dance music, baila. The baila form consists of vocals with guitar and handclaps or other percussion. Modern Sri Lankan music arose from these roots.
