C-Squat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Squat is a former squat in Manhattan on Avenue C aka Loisaida Avenue. See Squat has played host to a number of punk rock shows throughout its existence, including the annual Cracktoberfest. They continue to hold benefit shows to raise money for supplies and to help others in need of assistance. It is also the home of several people, including members of Choking Victim (whose members later split to form Leftöver Crack and INDK), Banji, Old Skull, Cotton and the Choreboys, Morning Glory, Casa de Chihuahua and Planned Collapse.

In 2002, the government of New York City granted ownership of eleven squats on the Lower East Side/East Village to the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board, including See Squat; the UHAB has secured loans to help repair the buildings, after which ownership will be turned over to the occupants inside. Sometimes, house members will be seen working on their building to raise their "sweat equity". The more they are seen doing this by others, the better chance they have in "squat court." Members do this to keep costs down and to help keep their future "rent" low and their self-esteem high.
