Călăraşi was founded 1848. Long ago, the word "călăraşi" meant "horsemen". (Today the word is "cǎlăreţi".) The name of Călăraşi was inspired by a legend. In this legend, it is said that once when Ştefan cel Mare fought the Ottomans, he ordered a regiment of horsemen to stand guard. They fought the Ottomans and gave their lives at this place, but in the end they won the battle.
