César Estrada Chávez Dual Language Immersion Charter School (referred to as César Chávez Charter School) is a public elementary charter school located in the California central coast city of Santa Barbara. It is under the governance of the Santa Barbara School Districts, and enrolls approximately 220 students in Grades K-6. The school's mascot is a cheetah.
César Chávez Charter School was founded in 2000. The current principal is Eva Neuer. The school celebrated its first graduating class of nine sixth graders in June 2006.
The mission of César Chávez Charter School is to develop bi-literate, bi-cultural students whose strong academic and cultural foundation prepare them to meaningfully participate in their families, their community and their world to create a more just and equitable society.
The César Chávez 50:50 dual language program design is based on nationally researched successful programs. All students learn to read in their primary language first while studying all other subjects in both languages. In the third grade students are formally instructed in language arts in their second language. César Chávez students learn the California Content Standards as do all students in the district and state; however, César Chávez students develop the vocabulary and concepts in two languages.
