[edit] Recent History

After a long spell in the Segunda División B the club was finally promoted out of the regionalised division in 2003. After 2 years in the segunda the club were spectacularly promoted to the primera division in 2005 after taking the Championship with a famous last day victory at local rivals Xerez. The team put up a brave fight to stay up but were eventually relegated back to the segunda in the 37 jornada away at Getafe.

[edit] Supporters

Cádiz fans are called "cadistas". They are quite famous among the country for being among the friendliest and most jovial, being voted Spain's best fans in a recent survey. At the end of 2006 Real Madrid awarded the club the title of the best fans to visit the Bernabeu - after the large numbers which travelled to support their team earlier in the year. Despite the population of the city of Cádiz being only 120,000, the stadium has sold out every match for four consecutive years. Due to work on the stadium the Carranza has been limited to a capacity of around 20,000. Cadiz have maintained an average attendance of around 17,000 in the 2006/07 season - spectacular when compared with the more modest league average of around 7,000 in the segunda. Unlike in other stadiums, supporters cheer opposition teams and players and sing songs such as, "Alcohol Alcohol Alcohol hemos venido a emborracharnos el resultado nos da igual" translating - "Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol! We came here to get drunk and the result doesn't matter!"[1]

[edit] 2006-2007 Season

After the departure of former coach Victor Esparrago in the close season, Cadiz cult hero "Oli" was named the new coach for 2006/07. The former striker wasted no time in signing players capable of a second promotion in three years as De Paula signed from Sociedad, and Nano arrived from Getafe.

After being installed as one of the favourites for promotion Cadiz started in stylish fashion, beating promoted Vecinadrio in the opening fixture at the Carranza, with a hat-trick from star striker Lucas Lobos. The 3-0 win however was followed by a mixed trip to the Canaries as Tenerife were beaten despite an injury to Lucas Lobos, which rules him out for several weeks. In the absence of Lobos, Cadiz failed to beat well fancied Murcia at the Carranza which sparked a losing streak that has put Cadiz well down in the segunda table.

An away defeats to Almería and Salamanca (including the loss of influential youngster Javier Acuna) were followed my a no show at the Carranza against Castellon which sparked prostests agmongst angry cadistas in the Carranza stand. The pressure on manager Oli was furthered with Cadiz crashing out of the Copa del Rey, again losing out to Castellon. In a crucial game for his future Oli managed to inspire his team to a 1-0 victory at a potential tricky away trip to Alicante where they faced Hercules but failed to string together double wins at home to Alaves, who were releagted along with Cadiz the previous season. Two points from three games at home were seen by cadistas as the main failing point, but after a 4-1 defeat at in form Albacete, away form was again called into question, along with manager Oli's future.

The trip of fellow surprise strugglers Numancia to the Carranza, a potentially tricky tie for Los Amarillos, was settled by summer signing Nano as Cadiz briefly eased the pressure on the manager before the away trip to Sporting Gijon. However, further defensive problems saw Cadiz leak 5 goals in a 5-4 defeat, which cost Oli his job. Immediately Jose Gonzalez (Previously manager in 2003) was installed as the new boss and began his reign with a disappointing 0-0 draw with Las Palmas. Despite the poor start, positives could be taken by the clean sheet, from a defence which was a shambles a week earlier. The return of Lucas Lobos to the side also looking promising after months out. Los Amarillos needed to continue the solid start under Gonzalez in Murcia in a potenetially tricky tie against Ciudad. The team put in a very confident performance but defence problems returned as Cadiz conceded a sloppy last minute goal to deny them the three poins after De Paula had put them ahead.

Again Cadiz were held in the Carranza to a goaless draw, this time by Poli Ejido however a new dawn was indicated with events in the Chapin in the Andalusian derby against Xerez. Despite going a goal down to their rivals Cadiz scored 4 to win the game by a three goal margin and send cadistas who had made the short trip wild. Another tough game against a promotion chasing side beckoned, table topping Valladolid the visitors to Andalusia. Los Amarillos maintained their unbeaten run under their new manager by keeping another clean sheet in a 0-0 draw. A respectable result against the league's form side. An away win at Lorca followed before Cadiz returned back to square one after failing to beat Ponferradina in the Carranza, another goal less draw. Going into the short winter break Los Amarillos still remained outside challengers for promotion. However, in order to complete the turn around since Oli's departure they needed to start taking their chances and end the horrible run of four straight 0-0 draws at the Carranza.

The first game of 2007 saw a positive point at an improving Elche side. This was followed up with another clean sheet at the Carranza - but this time Cadiz managed to score themselves against a Malaga side who had been brushed aside so easily eight months earlier in the team's big goodbye to the primera. Another good win at Real Madrid Castilla put Cadiz in a promising position with half the season gone - the performance and goal from new signing Pablo Hernandez particularly standing out from the game in Madrid. Wins away at Vecindario and at the Carranza over Tenerife (marred by and injury to Lobos) saw Cadiz enter a crucial game at second placed Murcia in fourth place, just two points off the promotion places. However, finally the unbeaten run under Jose Gonzalez came to an end, a first half free kick undoing the new promotion contenders.

Five points behind Almeria in third it was on the script for a fantastic game at the Carranza as the side from the east of Andalusia travelled west. A fantastic game saw the home side rip their opponents apart in phases but sadly Almeria grabbed a 2-2 draw after goals from Abel Buades and Pablo Hernandez had put Cadiz 2-1 up. A home win against Salamanca went some way to making up for the two dropped points against Almeria but Cadiz returned to losing ways by losing for the third time this season to relegation battlers Castellon. The defeat was a big blow for the club's promotion ambitions - with an eight point deficit to Almeria. In the next jornada Cadiz failed to make ground - despite teams above them dropping points. Hercules were the visitors to the Carranza and picked up a handy point after a second half goal - another two points dropped for Cadiz against modest opposition. A draw at Alaves followed before Cadiz went down 2-1 to Albacete at the Carranza. The defeat again meant more points dropped at home - and with Almeria + Murcia picking up three points it will now take a miracle for Cadiz to make it to the three promotion slots before the last day of the season on June 17th......
