This template abuses date of the succession box template for its CoEmperor attribute, which means it is not in italics by default -- if you fill in a co-emperor and want his name to be italicised you will have to do it yourself.

Alternatively (or additionally) the CoEmperor can be used to provide the period during which this particular emperor ruled, by setting it to an appropriate value:
