I've moved this backed to "Byward" as one word. It may have once been known as "By Ward" but as far as I can see the name used today by the city of Ottawa [1] and nearly everyone else is Byward - or sometimes ByWard. --LeeHunter 03:19, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The city of Ottawa website uses ByWard sometimes and Byward other times and the ByWard market association website uses ByWard. --AlainV 04:21, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

My map art map shows it as By Ward. But, I suppose that's not official. Earl Andrew 04:24, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

This is getting more confusing. I just went for a stroll in this very area, looking at street signs, plaques and business names. All of the street name signs very clearly spell out By Ward, with a very visible space between By and Ward. So do the bronze plaques on the By Ward market building. On the other hand, all of the commercial establishments with Byward or ByWard as part of their name clearly spell it out as a single word, with no spaces inside. --AlainV 06:00, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I would say street signs are more official than business names! Earl Andrew 06:24, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I know it's not really definitive, but Google gives about 36,000 hits for "byward market" and about 1,300 for "by ward market". --LeeHunter 20:31, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The map showing the location of the market could use some work. Because there are no annotations, someone who is not familiar with the area wouldn't have much of a clue what they were looking at. Also I'm not sure that a broad regional map is ideal for defining a relatively tiny section of a city. A map showing the area between Parliament Hill, the Rideau River and maybe south to the U of O might be more useful if someone has the time and inclination to find one. --Lee Hunter 00:42, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
