Byrne Creek is the newest Secondary School in Burnaby. The school opened in the fall of 2005. Students completing elementary school at Brantford Elementary School, Clinton Elementary School, Edmonds Community School, Glenwood Elementary School, Morley Elementary School, Stride Avenue Community School, Twelfth Avenue Elementary School, and Windsor Elementary School typically attend Byrne Creek.

The area of Byrne Creek, for which the school is named, can be traced to Peter Byrne - who served as reeve (mayor) from 1906 to 1910[2].

Starting from September 2006, Byrne Creek academic program include courses that are part of the Advanced Placement (AP) program.
