Location of Bynum, North Carolina

Bynum, North Carolina, is an unincorporated community located in northeastern Chatham County. Its most notable landmark is the Bynum General Store. The Old Bynum Bridge (built 1923) crossing the Haw River was closed to motor vehicle traffic in 1999 (traffic now crosses the Haw River on the newer Hwy. 15-501 bridge about 1000 feet north), but it still sits along one of North Carolina's designated statewide bicycle routes.

The town once housed the Odell Manufacturing Company, which made textiles. The mill village was built on the hill overlooking the plant. While the plant was closed and burned down around the year 2000, the homes are still there and are private dwellings.

Bynum is also home to world famous Folk Artist Clyde Jones (http://www.carrboro.com/clyde/).
