[edit] Sealing

The Bylong Valley Way is not fully sealed in the Mid-Western Regional Council area, and sealing of the remaining parts has been a political issue for decades. Until recently, there were four sections of unsealed road totalling 37km. Two sections are between Cox's Gap and Bylong with only around 500m of sealed road between them. The other two are south of Bylong on the way towards Rylstone, where 3km was sealed a few years ago, converting one long unsealed section to two shorter ones.

On 13th December 2006, The federal government announced $2 million of Auslink funding towards the completion of sealing of the Bylong Valley Way.[1] The overall cost will be $4.1 million. The Mid-Western Regional Council will contribute $1.2 million and the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority will contribute the remaining $900,000.[2]

Scott Parsons, a roads engineer at Mid-Western Regional council, has advised that the work will be completed in three stages. Stage one will run to June 2007 and involve sealing approximately eight kilometres south of Bylong. Stage two will run from July 2007 to June 2008 and will consist of completing sealing south of Bylong plus plus sealing approximately two or three kilometres north of Bylong. Stage three will see completion of sealing, and is intended to be completed around March 2009.

The dilapidated Kirks Bridge, crossing Baerami Creek at Baerami is to be demolished and replaced with a new concrete bridge between 2nd April and 31st August 2007.[3]

[edit] Connections

In conjunction with the Bathurst-Ilford Road to Bathurst, this very quiet and scenic route provides a leisurely alternative to going through Sydney to travel between the Hunter Valley and Bathurst.

There is a proposal to create an external Sydney Bypass, which would use the Bylong Valley Way, requiring it to be upgraded including making it fully sealed, widening narrow sections and replacing older timber bridges.

The part of the Bylong Valley Way east of Bylong is designated MR 208. From a T-intersection at a railway level crossing just north of the village of Bylong, MR 208 turns off towards Ulan, following the Sandy Hollow railway line and the Bylong Valley Way becomes MR 215 as it turns south to pass through Bylong, Rylstone and Kandos.
