- Northern languages is a neutral term corresponding to the Korean word 원시부여어 (Hanja : 原始 夫餘語)litteraly : Proto-Buyeo languages, used by Korean linguists.
- Some languages belonging to Japonic family are classified on the northern group due to a close relationship between Old Japanese and Goguryeo languages according to Christopher Beckwith studies
- Southern languages is a neutral term corresponding to the Korean word 원신한어 (Hanja : 原始 韓어) litteraly : Proto-Korean languages or Koreanic languages. Koreanic a a term often used by linguists as well.
- Silla unified language (통일 신라어) or Old Korean (고대 국어 ) seems to be a sprachbund language containing words from Goguryeo and Baekje languages.
