Butterfly on a Wheel is an upcoming film starring Pierce Brosnan, Maria Bello and Gerard Butler. It is due out in 2007. The film’s title is an allusion to a line of Alexander Pope’s Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot: “Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?” The line is usually interpreted as questioning why someone would put massive effort into achieving something minor or unimportant.[2]

[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Chicago residents Neil (Gerard Butler) and Abby Warner (Maria Bello) have a perfect marriage and a worry-free life. However, when their daughter Sophie gets kidnapped, their lives are thrown into chaos as they are forced to comply with the kidnapper's demands. The kidnapper is Ryan (Pierce Brosnan), who is a dangerously efficient sociopath who feels like he has nothing to lose.

For the next twenty-four hours, Neil and Abby have no choice but to comply with Ryan's demands, and it soon becomes apparent that money is not the object -- in exchange for Sophie, Ryan wants them to kill an innocent man.[3]

[edit] Production

Pierce Brosnan joined the film's cast in late 2005.[4] Maria Bello and Gerard Butler joined production on January 19, 2006.[5]

Filming began in February, 2006 and finished the following May.[1] Vancouver stands in for Chicago but the production shot in the latter city for landscapes before moving to the United Kingdom for post-production.[1] Filming also took place in Los Angeles.[6]
