They have successfully risen to the highest levels in a variety of sports as well as the world of business.

The tribe of Kashmiri Butts descends from Arabs who left the Middle East and moved into central Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran today) before going into Kashmir (Srinagar) from Buttkhela [where the name 'Butt' originates from].

A very small number of Butts were originally idol worshippers of Kashmir called Bhat who converted and accepted Islam in a time when Islam was dominating 3/4 of the world, and while conversion was rampant across the globe. Even now you find many Kashmiris with the last name Bhat.

Others, the majority of which now reside in the Punjab region of Pakistan, are originally Buttkhel Afghans.

Due to Afghan, Persian, Pashtun, Kashmiri and Punjabi heritage, many Kashmiri Butts have different skin and hair combinations. They range from light skin and light eyes, light skin and dark eyes, medium tone skin and light eyes, and medium tone skin and dark eyes.

Although there are still a number of Kashmiri Butts living in Kashmir (predominantly in Srinagar - Indian Occupied Kashmir), the vast majority now reside in the Punjab province of Pakistan, mainly in Lahore.

  • Ahmed Butt: A professional Male model. He won the 2003 Lux Style Award for best model of the year. He has worked with fashion photographers in France, Italy, and Germany.
  • Maqbool Butt: a Kashmiri freedom fighter. He is a hero amongst pro-independence Kashmiri's, who refer to him as 'Baba-e-Quam' - father of the movement and Shaheed-e-Kashmir. He was the first Kashmiri to be judicially murdered on Indian soil, making him the first authentic martyr of the Kashmiri independence movement. Friends knew him as a true nationalist with a passion for Azadi. The enemies of the Kashmiri freedom movement dubbed him as an 'enemy agent'. He was wrongfully imprisoned in Pakistan and unlawfully hanged in India exactly one week before his 46th birthday, on 11th February 1984. Whilst on trial, Maqbool Butt said: "My only crime is that I have rebelled against, slavery, oppression, poverty, ignorance and exploitation of my people".[citation needed]
