Butler is a city in Bates County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,209 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Bates CountyGR6.

Science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein was born in Butler. His childhood home still attracts people who want to photograph themselves outside it. Butler is also home to the worldest smallest tombstone.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,209 people, 1,723 households, and 1,047 families residing in the city. The population density was 421.0/km² (1,089.5/mi²). There were 1,914 housing units at an average density of 191.5/km² (495.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.65% White, 1.92% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.
There were 1,723 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,531, and the median income for a family was $31,596. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $18,523 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,237. About 15.4% of families and 19.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.3% of those under age 18 and 18.3% of those age 65 or over.
