Butantã

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Butantã (pron. IPA: [butɐ̃'tɐ̃], tupi for "crushed soil") is a borough of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It's placed in the west margin of the river Pinheiros and it's divided into six districts: Butantã, Jaguaré, Vila Sônia, Rio Pequeno, Raposo Tavares and Morumbi.

In this borough is placed the headquarts of the government of the State of São Paulo: the Palácio dos Bandeirantes (The Bandeirantes Palace), and also the headquarters and main campus of the University of São Paulo. Like Pinheiros, Butantã has many high-class residential areas, despite of some slumquarters placed in the border areas, because it's also placed in the limits of the city. The borough of Butantã has also the Morumbi Soccer Stadium, the largest private soccer stadium in the world. It belongs to the São Paulo Futebol Clube, one of the most important Brazilian soccer teams.

The Instituto Butantan is also located here.
