Gawks, beginning to look like a tourism entry! Anyone with any historical info?vcxlor 11:56, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

"Saturday. We were employed getting our goods as far as Phœbe's tent, which we did by two o'clock." This was necessitated by sixty yards of sandhills, impassable to the truck. "John was employed fitting the truck, and I was his cad. The rest were making a road to the river" — the first formation of what is now the shady main street of Busselton.

[edit] Surveyor General

There is an error on the page. Lieutenant Bunbury was never Surveyor General of Western Australia. For the first 42 years of the Swan River Colony the Surveyor General was John Septimus Roe. I can't fix the page myself because I don't know who you actually mean: Bunbury or Roe. Snottygobble | Talk 11:35, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cattle Chosen

Also, the "fact that the cattle chose the location" of Cattle Chosen is stretching the truth somewhat. John Garrett Bussell chose the location after thoroughly exploring the area. A cow (named Yulika) went missing from their old location on the Blackwood River shortly before they relocated. They assumed the cow was lost forever, but it turned up at their new location shortly after they did. The point of the name was that the cow had wandered off because the feed at their old location was poor, and had ended up at their new location because the feed was better. [edit] Copy-edit, wikification, cleanup

Hossen27's done a great job of expanding this article. I've done a little bit of cleaning up, and incorporated the Cattle Chosen info above, but I left the Henry Bunbury/Septimus Roe thing alone, as I have the same problems Snottygobble mentioned. Also, I toned down the tourism-speak and removed the line about Busselton being a blue-ribbon Liberal party seat for 135 years. The first Legislative Council elections were indeed in 1870, but the Liberal Party of Australia wasn't founded until 1945. The Libs were defeated in 1947, but they've held it since winning in 1950. Would it be better to say that the seat has been in conservative hands for 135 years, if something along these lines is true? - Gobeirne 20:46, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] thanks for the tips

  • thanks for all the help so far guys. i know the cattle chosen info is a little wrong, but its a great story. Im not sure where i got the info on the Bunbury/Roe thing, i read it and i thought it would be reliable, ill check into it.

thanks Hossen27

[edit] Roe/Bunbury issue

The shire of Busselton website is where i found my info on this, i guess i thought the sourse was reliable. I know Roe was the Surveyor General at the time, but im not sure if it was Roe or Bunbury that sugested the location for the town

  • I went back through the material I used to write Bussell family and Thomas Vasse and did a bit of a rewrite of the history section. Bunbury was head of a contingent of troops stationed at Wonnerup. He absolutely hated the place and it was on his recommendation that the decision was taken to establish a toown at Busselton instead of Wonnerup. But the final decision would have been Roe's. I have also removed information on Vasse that is in article Thomas Vasse, since I don't see the need for it to be in both articles. Snottygobble | Talk 06:43, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Shire of Busselton

Do you think this section should be moved to its own article? - Gobeirne 08:54, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

  • it probably should be, but it's not really important. if a Shire of Busselton page is created a refrence to the shire should remain, maybe the localities that make up the town should only be listed eg. West busselton, Busselton. Quite a few other Australian town articles have listed the localities, it's just that Busso has a lot of them.

[edit] Heart (disease) studies

See Framingham_Heart_Study. Can anyone of the presumed residents here add information about the longitudinal studies of cardiovascular health? Midgley 19:20, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Getting Big

Suprised someone hasnt suggested subsidiary articles yet! How about leaving the heading for the Jetty in this article (with a see...leader) - and making it a separate article? SatuSuro 13:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Some editors I know would get fierce about the white space around events, and try to pull the local govt info onto a subsidiary article, as well as the historical buildings, and the local economic stuff, separate articles each! - cripes if I am not corrected this is the only locality in WA that has this sort of info - check Albany and Geraldton - economically larger economies with nothing like this! that's a compliment if you dont follow me - but beware the bighters/ other editors SatuSuro 14:02, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I do agree there is a need for a seperate article for the shire (Shire of Busselton, Western Australia), but leaving the localities that are actually in Busselton on the original page (eg. Busselton, West Busselton). The jetty is important enough for its own page too. I plan to take pictures of the historical places and the event when they happen, eventually. I think this page is longer than Albany and Geraldton because there are no large contributors from those towns, at least that im aware of. Hossen27 14:21, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Restructure?

Personally, I think this needs restructuring into something more coherent. Maybe something like:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Climate
  • Demographics
  • Economy
    • Tourism
      • Sites of interest
      • Events
    • Industry
    • Facilities
  • Government
  • Sports

I have pulled the jetty out.

    • I agree with the proposed restructure it would look much better, at the moment its all over the place. A seperate shire article should also created. Hossen27 03:14, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alf Bussell

Also, I noticed this sentence in Busselton Jetty:

Alf Bussell, a descendant of the original Bussell family, tried repeatedly to gain a seat in Parliament for the purpose of seeing the Jetty repaired and maintained.

I wrote an article on Alfred Bussell ages ago. He was a nominee member of the Legislative Council from 1872 to 1874, but I'm not aware that he contested any elections. Can you clarify? Snottygobble 00:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

The recent Alf Bussell (ie not 1872-1874) was notorious for trying for a position in every available form of government for the jetty... I think he might be now deceased. SatuSuro 00:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh, okay. Thanks. Snottygobble 01:08, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
He is still alive as far as i know Hossen27 05:05, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
I think if there is any ref/info on his endless trying, it would be worth more than a mention in the jetty art! SatuSuro 10:18, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
You dont hear much about him anymore and info would be hard to find. But there needs to be more on the push to fix the jetty, especialy now with the government and its new policy on it. Hossen27 11:18, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
