Hampshire Trading Standards Service originated from the initial introduction of the Weights and Measures Act, and is still better known as the Inspectors of Weights and Measures. Trading Standards Service activities are still primarily enforcement of the Weights and Measures Act, but also has the following responsibilities, in whole or in part, as of 31st March 1988;

Advice for new businesses is available from a number of private ventures and government funded schemes. Advice is available from Business Link, Department of Trade and Industry and the Inland Revenue.

Hampshire County Council and the Economic Development Office sponsor a number of local business awards.

The Portsmouth News Business Awards, sponsored by The News, Business Link Wessex and the EDO is an annual event with the categories Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Business Personality of the Year, Community Contribution of the Year, Exporter of the Year, Innovation of the Year, Team of the Year and Achiever of the Year. Entry is free by authorised entry form from The News business editor Jeremy Dunning on (023) 9262 2138.

Wessex Business Woman of the Year awards honour successful women in business and provide a role model to encourage other women to enter the business arena. Nominations for the award are invited from societies, businesses, the world of sport, entertainment, the arts and individuals. Test Valley Business Awards are open to every business in Test Valley and every business can apply for an award. Categories include The EPS Networks Business in the Community Award, The Hampshire County Council Small Business of the Year Award, The Roke Manor Research Award for Technological Innovation, The Test Valley Borough Council New Business of the Year Award, The Town Centre Management Award for Retail Excellence and The Waitrose Achieving Business Excellence Through People Award. Applications for the event should be made through the web-based entry form [2].

The Hampshire Food & Drink Awards includes Best Farm Shop, Butcher/Meat Producer of the Year, Best Specialist Food Shop, Food Producer of the Year, Best Organic Trader, Drinks Producer of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, New Forest Local Food & Drink Award, Best Farmers' Market, Dining Pub of the Year, Country Pub of the Year, Chef of the Year, Restaurant of the Year and Most Distinctive Local Menu.
